What is a sacred space?
A sacred space is an environment that fosters a sense of reverence, peace and connection to something greater than ourselves. It’s a place where we feel safe to let go of the outside world and tune into our inner wisdom. Scared spaces don’t have to be grand or elaborate; they can be as simple as a corner in your room, a spot in a garden, or a dedicated alter on a shelf.
The key is that these spaces support your spiritual and emotional wellbeing, offering a physical and energetic environment conductive to healing, reflection and growth.
Why Create A Sacred Space?
• Encourages Mindfullness: A sacred space provides a unique are where you can practice mindfulness, meditation or prayer without distractions.
• Restore Balance: It’s a space where you can retreat from the chaos of everyday life, helping you to restore and ground yourself.
• Foster Spiritual Connection: Whether you have a religious practice or more personal journey, a sacred space can support your connection to your higher self, nature, or the Devine.
• Enhance Creativity: A quiet, intentional space allows your mind to relax and expand, making it easier to connect with creativity and insights.
Step-by-Step To Building Your Sacred Space
1. Choose the right location
• Consider Energy: Choose a spot in your home that feels peaceful and has the energy you desire. A quiet corner, a window or a tree stump in your back yard could be just the space you need.
• Minimize Distractions: Make sure the space is away from busy areas where noise might disrupt your time there. If possible, find a space that has a natural element like a window with a view of nature or use a small indoor plant. Allow natural elements to be present.
2. Set An Intention
• Before you begin, set an intentions for your sacred space. Ask yourself: What purpose do I want this space to serve? Do I want a space for mediation, reflection or creativity? Or do I seek spiritual and emotional healing? Setting a clear intention will guide the process of making this space meaningful and sacred.
3. Clear The Space
• Free Up Space: Begin by removing all unnecessary items. A clean space will help you create clearness and calm. Make sure everything involved in your space is intentional and has purpose.
• Cleanse The Energy: You can simply clear the space by using sage, incense, candles, or sound cleansing (like a singing bowl or bell). You can even come up with a chant, asking the space to be rid of all energies that do not serve you. Open a window! Rituals like this can help remove any still or negative energy that does not serve you, setting the stage for new, positive vibrations.
4. Choose Sacred Objects
• Natural Elements: Nature is often a powerful presence in sacred spaces because of its connection to the earth and natural cycles.
• Crystals: Amethyst (my favorite) is for calmness, Citrine for abundance, and rose quartz can represent love.
• Plants: A small indoor plant or tree can represent growth and vitality.
• Feathers: Symbolize freedom or spiritual connection (often used in Native American traditions)
• Shells or Stones: Each carries its own symbolism, like grounding or protection.
• Photos: A cherished photo from a meaningful event or loved one who’s passed on (can be a place to honor them)
5. Lighting And Vibes
This can represent enlightenment, transformation, or the Devine. You might want to add candles, fairy lights or salt lamps. They can add a warm and whimsical energy.
6. Invite Sound & Smells
A sacred space is multi-sensory, so incorporate objects that engage your sense of smell and sound.
• Incense or essential oils: Lavender, Sandalwood, or Frankincense are common choices to promote peace, focus or grounding. Citrus oils can boost your moods, bringing energy and creativity to your space.
• Chimes & Bells: Can add a shift in energies to bring peace and calmness.
7. Create Rituals And Practices
• A ritual can be seen as a form of devotion—whether it’s devotion to a higher power, the self, or a personal intention. This dedication doesn’t need to be religious but can simply be about honoring the present moment, the space you’re in, or your personal journey.
• For example, lighting a candle or incense can serve as a small but powerful act of acknowledging the sacred. Taking a moment to reflect on what you’re grateful for or what you’re calling into your life adds depth to the act, making it a personal offering of energy.
• Rituals don’t have to be elaborate. Simple, everyday actions can be turned into sacred rituals with the right intention. For instance, having a morning tea or coffee can become a mindful ritual by setting aside the time to drink it slowly, focusing on its warmth, aroma, and the nourishment it provides. This transforms an ordinary action into a ritual of presence and gratitude.
8. Respect the Space and Return Regularly
• A sacred space is meant to be respected. The more you treat it with love, the more it will support you in your spiritual practice and personal growth. Make it a priority to return to your sacred space regularly, even if it’s just for a few moments each day.
• As you develop a routine around your sacred space, you will begin to feel its energy more intensely. Over time, the space will hold your intentions and provide a sanctuary that nurtures your mind, body, and soul.
